It is sometimes called the 'wear-and-tear arthritis'.

This tends to strike people in their fifties and above and affects more women than men.

It refers to the erosion of cartilage that covers the ends of bones between joints. The usually smooth cartilage becomes rough and this results in friction, pain and inflammation.

The changes in the cartilage stimulate the overgrowth of bone cells as the body tries to correct the imbalance. This overgrowth can lead to bony spurs that contribute to more pain.

Joints affected include those of the Wrists, hands, knees, spine and hips.

CAUSES OF OSTEOARTHRITIS

Osteoarthritis generally occurs when the cartilage that cushions the ends of bones in the joints gradually diminishes and deteriorates. Cartilage is a firm, slippery tissue due to which frictionless joint motion is possible.

Gradually, if the cartilage wears down completely, both the bones (upper and lower) rub on each other.

Besides the breakdown of cartilage, osteoarthritis affects the entire joint. It causes changes in the bone and deterioration of the connective tissues that hold the joint together and attach muscle to bone. It also causes inflammation of the joint lining.

TRIGGER FACTORS FOR OSTEOARTHRITIS

Factors that can increase the risk of osteoarthritis are:

Old age. Risk of osteoarthritis increases with age.

Obesity. Excess body weight contributes to osteoarthritis in several ways. The more you weigh, the greater your risk. Increased weight adds stress to weight-bearing joints, such as your hips and knees. Also, fat tissue produces proteins that can cause harmful inflammation in and around your joints.

Gender. Females are more likely to develop osteoarthritis

Joint injuries. Injuries, like sports injuries or from an accident, can increase the risk of osteoarthritis. Also chronic injuries which may have occurred many years ago can increase the risk of osteoarthritis.

Repeated stress on the joint. If there is repetitive stress on a joint due to any of your regular activity (job/ sports) , that joint might eventually develop osteoarthritis.

Genetics. For some people it's hereditary.

Congenital Bone deformities. Some people are born with malformed joints or defective cartilage.

Certain metabolic diseases. These include diabetes and a condition in which your body has excess iron .

SYMPTOMS OF OSTEOARTHRITIS

Osteoarthritis symptoms often develop slowly and may worsen over time.

Signs and symptoms of osteoarthritis include :

Stiffness. Joint stiffness might be most after waking up in the morning or after being inactive.

Tenderness. The joint might feel tender when you apply light pressure on it

Pain. Affected joints might hurt during or after movement.

Reduced flexibility. Difficulty in moving the joint through its full range of motion.

Crackling sensation. You might feel some kind of a crackling sensation upon moving the joint.

Bone spurs. These extra bits of bone, which feel like hard lumps, can form around the affected joint.

Swelling. This might be caused by soft tissue inflammation around the joint.

COMPLICATIONS OF OSTEOARTHRITIS

Osteoarthritis is a degenerative disease that can worsens over time, often resulting in chronic pain if correct measures are not taken at the right time.

Joint pain and stiffness can become severe enough to make daily tasks difficult.

Depression and sleep disturbances can result from the pain and disability of osteoarthritis.

ACTION PLAN WITH HOLISTIC HEALING FOR OSTEOARTHRITIS

The focus is on treating the root cause, precipitating cause and the maintaining cause by removing triggers and including foods that reduce inflammation.

PREVENTION AND LIFE STYLE CHANGES IN OSTEOARTHRITIS

• Physiotherapy may be helpful to some extent.

• Consider rubbing capsicum cream onto affected joints. This is derived from cayenne pepper which can reduce the sensation of pain in the body.

• Place cold packs on inflamed joints to reduce inflammation.

• Spend time outside in the daylight. This promotes the formation of vitamin D in the skin which aids proper bone formation.

• Lose weight if you are overweight. Excess weight puts pressure on the joints and contributes to damage.

• Get regular, moderate exercise. Do not put pressure on affected joints but do try to strengthen surrounding muscles and ligaments. Walking and swimming are suitable for most people.

CONNECTION OF OSTEOARTHRITIS WITH MIND-BODY-SOUL/ EMOTIONAL CAUSES OF OSTEOARTHRITIS

Your mind is the most powerful tool you have.

Every thought you get, causes changes throughout your body.

Neutral, calming or happy thoughts have the opposite effect.

It is always a set of emotions or an emotional state that manifests itself in the form of a disease.

The key emotions that generally co-exist so as to become the root cause of Osteoarthritis are as follows.

Most of the time you have been so caught up in doing things for others that you land up ignoring your own self. Although willingly, but a time comes when you have depleted your energy and resources for others and ultimately you start feeling resentful and angry with yourself for not giving yourself time to enjoy life.

Over a period of time, you must have been manipulated by influential people into believing that you are of service to others. As a result, you always feel obligated to serve, help and feel other people's mistakes.

That's a constant guilt within you that you have not been able to focus on yourself and achieve your goals. You wanted to express how you feel, but you were always made to feel guilty or ashamed for communicating these feelings.

This resulted in a great deal of inner conflict. You feel controlled and tapped by the needs of others. As a direct result, you have become rigid, resistant, and inflexible in your relationships. You feel dissociated with your emotions and try to keep them under control at any cost.

Here are ways to master the mind/body connection to help in curing Osteoarthritis

1. Relax. Relaxation is an active state of deep rest where the mind is quiet and the body is physiologically calm.

Meditation, guided visualization, body scanning and slow, diaphragmatic breathing are some of the many techniques that achieve relaxation.

2. Stop taking stress. For whatever reason it may be,stress is heavily implicated in any disease. Review your life and see if you can avoid the causes of stress or change your response to them. Stop worrying about the past or future and live in the present. As that is all you can influence.

3. Express your emotions. Emotions are energy. Suppressing them takes physical effort that can cause pain.

Repressed emotions cause poor health. Suppressing emotion also keeps you stuck, unable to move past what you are avoiding. By contrast, writing in a journal or talking to someone about how you feel, and even just sitting quietly and "mindfully" to fully experience and acknowledge the feeling, all lead to feeling better both emotionally and physically.

4. Try to be cheerful. When you laugh your body produces endorphins, the body's natural healers.

5. Process your trauma. There could be a connection between earlier experiences of psychological trauma or chronic pain or illness of the past.

90% of the diseases are a result of build-up of unresolved negative emotions and pre-programming of your mind as discussed above. Your soul tries to express these unresolved negative emotions first through your thoughts and feelings. If you fail to listen to the messages that are crying out to be heard, these messages become stronger and then harder for you to ignore. They then express and manifest themselves by means of pain, discomfort or ill-health.

Along with Emotional management, Spiritual programming of your mind is a must to unwind yourself from the clutches of the negative emotions you've held so long which has ultimately led to the dis-ease.

This we achieve by means of:

1- Facilitated Spiritual Detox

2- Meditation
