When we talk about blood pressure, we are referring to the pressure of the blood against the artery and blood-vessel walls.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), high blood pressure, also referred to as hypertension, is when the pressure of the blood pumping round the body is higher than 160/90. Normal blood pressure would be considered to be between 100/70-140/90.

The higher number is the systolic reading, which indicates the pressure of the blood when the heart contracts (pumps) and pressure is at its highest. The lower figure is the diastolic pressure and this refers to the pressure when the heart relaxes between pumps. This is when pressure is at its lowest.

The pressure of the blood depends on a number of factors: the power of the heart, the amount of blood in the body and the health of the blood-vessel walls.

For example, if the blood vessels are clogged up with plaque and cholesterol, they will be narrower and the pressure of the blood will be greater. In turn, high blood pressure can cause damage to the artery walls. This can lead to the deposition of cholesterol and plaque in order to patch up the damage.

PHYSICAL CAUSES OF HYPERTENSION

Essential or primary hypertension refers to high blood pressure with no apparent physical cause.

Secondary hypertension refers to high blood pressure that has been caused by another disease. For example, the narrowing of the blood vessels, as in atherosclerosis and arteriosclerosis, will increase the pressure of the blood.

Poor kidney function can increase the amount of fluid in the blood and this can also lead to high blood pressure.

There are also many possible contributory factors to high blood pressure. These include:

• Genetic predisposition.

• Stress.

• Being overweight.

• Nutrient deficiencies, particularly the essential fats, magnesium, B vitamins and vitamin C.

• Diet high in salt, saturated fat and sugar.

• High cholesterol.

• Kidney disorders.

• High caffeine and alcohol consumption.

• Smoking.

• Hyperactive thyroid.

• Food intolerances.

• Damaged arteries.

SYMPTOMS OF HYPERTENSION

Those with high blood pressure may have no particular symptoms.

However, some people may present with:

• Headaches,

• Nosebleeds,

• Palpitations,

• Visual disturbances,

• Dizziness,

• Chest pains,

• Fatigue and

• Breathlessness.

COMPLICATIONS OF HYPERTENSION

Having high blood pressure puts you at increased risk of heart disease and suffering a heart attack or stroke.

Other associated conditions include obesity, diabetes, arteriosclerosis, atherosclerosis, kidney problems and hyperthyroidism.

ACTION PLAN WITH HOLISTIC HEALING FOR HYPERTENSION

PREVENTION AND LIFE STYLE CHANGES IN HYPERTENSION

• Moderate exercise daily is essential. Walking is a good place to start if you don't currently do any exercise. Start with 20 minutes a day; swing your arms naturally and aim to get your heart rate up without actually panting when you finish.

• Learn to manage stress. High blood pressure is often linked to stress, so review your life and see what is stressing you.

• Yoga, tai chi, meditation and breathing exercises are all techniques that can help.

• When you get up in the morning, before you jump out of bed and start your day, take five minutes to just be still. Sit on the end of your bed, close your eyes, place your right hand on your stomach and simply breathe in through your nose and out through your mouth very slowly. Feel the breath in your stomach. Do this 20 times. Monitor your blood pressure. It is important to monitor your blood pressure to see how you are getting on. Do not be alarmed if your blood pressure rises initially. This can be a result of sodium being released from the cells as you replace it with magnesium and potassium.

• Do not give up on the diet because you think it is not working. This is a sure sign that your body is restoring balance.

• Stick with it and you should start to see the readings coming down and overall health improving.

• Treat yourself to essential oil massages. Essential oils are absorbed through the skin and can have a calming effect on the nervous system which controls blood pressure and stress reactions.

• Eat a low-salt diet that emphasizes fruits, vegetables and whole grains

• Limit the amount of animal fats and use good fats in moderation

• Lose extra pounds and maintain a healthy weight

• Quit smoking

• Exercise on most days of the week for at least 30 minutes

• Drink alcohol in moderation, if at all

CONNECTION OF HYPERTENSION WITH MIND-BODY-SOUL/ EMOTIONAL CAUSES OF HYPERTENSION

Your mind is the most powerful tool you have.

Every thought you get, causes changes throughout your body.

Neutral, calming or happy thoughts have the opposite effect.

It is always a set of emotions or an emotional state that manifests itself in the form of a disease.

The key emotions that generally co-exist so as to become the root cause of High Blood pressure are as follows.

You feel powerless in your circumstances and use suppressed rage, aggression or anger to express boundaries. You fear being out of control and as a result end-up feeling overly controlling of others and situations.

You are afraid of your anger and feel that you can't handle it, so you stuff it. You stuff your negative emotions with intimates for fear of hurting your loved ones.

Your parents might have always been occupied with problems and demands from others, responsibilities or marital problems. You may have been confused as to how to go about finding happiness.

You might often turn to alcohol to take the edge off when life becomes too overwhelming. The stress in your family life has left you feeling unsafe and unsecure of when to relax and when to be on guard.

You have an abiding inability to relax and you do not allow yourself to feel the love, affection, compassion coming from others.

You may be resenting being controlled by chaotic circumstances. Your anger serves as a fighting force.

You like to keep your own counsel, choosing to cut yourself off from any possible support.

You do not like to feel obligated to others and value your independence and freedom.

Betrayal trauma might have taken place early in your life and now similar issues are repeating in your personal relationship.

You have become hyper-self-responsible and feel that you can't count on anyone or anything.

You might have made negative association with love and you often sabotage the love that you have in your life.

You are stewing on negative emotion and thoughts. You cannot let go of past injustices and you may be suppressing your emotions to a point where it be explosive.

You often urgent matters to be decided at the last minute although knowing that it is difficult to resolve matters in the heat of the moment.

More patience and willingness to work things through are needed in many areas of your life.

Here are ways to master the mind/body connection to keep a check on Hypertension.

1. Relax. Relaxation is an active state of deep rest where the mind is quiet and the body is physiologically calm.

Meditation, guided visualization, body scanning and slow, diaphragmatic breathing are some of the many techniques that achieve relaxation.

2. Stop taking stress. Stress is heavily implicated in any disease. Review your life and see if you can avoid the causes of stress or change your response to them. Stop worrying about the past or future and live in the present. As that is all you can influence.

3. Express your emotions. Emotions are energy. Suppressing them takes physical effort that can cause pain.

Repressed emotions cause poor health. Suppressing emotion also keeps you stuck, unable to move past what you are avoiding. By contrast, writing in a journal or talking to someone about how you feel, and even just sitting quietly and "mindfully" to fully experience and acknowledge the feeling, all lead to feeling better both emotionally and physically.

4. Try to be cheerful. When you laugh your body produces endorphins, the body's natural healers.

5. Process your trauma. There could be a connection between earlier experiences of psychological trauma or chronic pain or illness of the past.

Your soul tries to express these unresolved negative emotions first through your thoughts and feelings. If you fail to listen to the messages that are crying out to be heard, these messages become stronger and then harder for you to ignore. They then express and manifest themselves by means of pain, discomfort or ill-health.

Along with Emotional management, Spiritual programming of your mind is a must to unwind yourself from the clutches of the negative emotions you've held so long which has ultimately led to the dis-ease.

This we achieve by means of:
