Obesity is a complex disease which involves excessive amount of body fat. Apart from being a cosmetic concern, Obesity is also a medical problem that increases your risk of other diseases and health problems, such as heart disease, diabetes, high blood pressure and certain cancers

The prevalence of obesity has increased sharply since the mid-seventies especially in the developed countries. In fact, obesity has become so rampant that more children and teenagers are obese nowadays than ever before. 40-50 % of the adult population in the world is obese.

CAUSES OF OBESITY

There are certain factors that contribute to obesity:

Weight-loss inhibitors

1. Excessive unhealthy food intake

2. Lack of exercise

3. Cravings

4. Mineral and vitamin imbalances

5. Insulin imbalances (caused by too many sugary carbohydrates)

6. Food intolerances

7. Poor digestive function

8. Poor adrenal function

9. Poor metabolic function

10. Sluggish liver

11. Thyroid problems

12. Water retention

1) Excessive unhealthy food intake - Eating bad food can inhibit your ability to lose weight. Most junky foods contain unhealthy fat, added white sugars, additives and or artificial sweeteners. So what you are really getting is empty, high calories sludge with little nutritional value. As a result, you never feel truly satisfied. Your body ends up craving and you respond by eating more of the same old rubbish, easily piling on the pounds.

2) Lack of exercise - Exercise burns calories and also increases muscle mass. You might not feel like doing exercise at first but find something that you love, get started and you will be on a natural high as well as trim and slim.

3)Cravings - Added sugars in food is one of the worst advents of our modern society. You crave sugar if your blood-sugar levels are constantly out of balance by eating sugary foods; if you have nutrient deficiencies, yeast overgrowths; if you eat a diet high in refined, processed carbohydrates. This is why if you eat just one chocolate biscuit, you crave more.

Eat a balanced, nutrient-rich diet to break the cycle of cravings, sugar and weight gain. Eating well not only nourishes your body but regulates your blood-sugar levels so that you don't get those lows. Certain foods help to regulate blood-sugar levels and tame sugar cravings. Whole grains and fresh veggies are great choices. Yams, sweet potatoes and squash help to curb a sweet tooth, too.

4) Vitamin and Mineral imbalances - Deficiencies of chromium, manganese, and magnesium may cause sugar cravings (more than 80 per cent of chromium is destroyed in the processing of foods

Finally, eat smaller, more frequent meals and regular healthy snacks through the day, especially mid-morning and mid-afternoon, when blood-sugar levels may fluctuate.

5) Insulin imbalances - When we eat, glucose from the digestion of carbohydrates is absorbed into the blood. At this this point, blood-sugar levels are raised. This sends a signal to the pancreas to release insulin. The insulin's job is to carry the glucose from the blood to the cells in order to bring blood-sugar levels back to normal. Once in the cells ,glucose can be used for energy or stored for later as glycogen. In a healthy diet this process works perfectly.

However, excessive consumption of refined carbohydrates, particularly sugary foods, upsets the balance and everything starts to go haywire. Your body has to produce increasing amounts of insulin to keep blood-sugar levels normal. Eventually you become resistant to the insulin, so more needs to be produced. Once this happens, the glycogen stores become full and glucose is converted to fat. You are then caught in a vicious cycle where the more unstable your blood-sugar levels, the more prone you will be to craving sweets and unrefined carbohydrates like bread and the easier it is to lay down fat.

Glucose tolerance - If you recognize three or more of the symptoms listed below, you may have a problem with the regulation of insulin and glucose in your body.

• Difficulty in concentrating.

• Excessive consumption of caffeine, chocolate or cigarettes.

• Excessive sweating.

• Excessive thirst.

• Extreme difficulty in getting out of bed.

• Falling asleep in the middle of the day/feeling really drowsy.

• Irritability without frequent meals.

Drink more water. Drink eight glasses of water a day between meals. Have a large glass of water 20 to 30 minutes before meals, not during meals as this is a recipe for gas.

Breaking the cycle - In order to break this cycle ,you need to eat a diet that keeps insulin levels as low as possible. Over time, this can improve the cellular response to insulin so less is needed to keep blood-sugar levels normal.

Eat small, regular meals and snacks rather than large meals. Include fibre and protein with each meal as these slow down the release of glucose from carbohydrates. Drink herbal teas and water instead of tea, coffee or alcohol . Daily, moderate exercise improves the cellular response to insulin and normalizes appetite. Stress upsets blood-sugar levels. Learn relaxation such as techniques yoga, tai chi, chi gung or meditation. Take blood-sugar balancing nutrients such as amino chromium, acid complex, vitamin D, magnesium, zinc and B vitamins that makes up chocolate. You'll find them in the health-food store.

6) Food intolerances - We often crave the same foods day in and day out. But if you eat the same foods every day, for years, in many cases you can become sensitive to those very foods, sometimes referred to as food intolerances. And usually the foods that we crave are the same ones that lead to weight gain. Moreover, by eating the same foods every day, you limit your intake of essential nutrients, vitamins, minerals and co-factors.

7) Poor digestive function - Your digestive system is responsible for breaking down food into amino acids, glucose and fats, releasing nutrients from food and the elimination process. If it is not functioning optimally, you will feel unwell and this can lead to overeating as your body start to crave nutrients. You may well be constipated, too .So improving digestion becomes a serious matter.

8) Poor adrenal function - When adrenal function is out of balance, then more stress hormones could be released. This hormone release can exacerbate blood-sugar fluctuations, which may cause further weight gain.

9) Poor metabolic function - If you don't eat food on a regular basis you could actually cause weight problems. Reduced metabolic rate - this can happen if you have choosed to be on special weight loss diets in the past. Reducing food intake gives a message to the body that food is scarce. In order to ensure your long-term survival, your body reduces the amount of calories you burn on a daily basis. When you start eating more normal amounts again, you will store the extra calories as fat much more easily.

10) Sluggish liver - The liver is involved in many different body processes including detoxification, blood-sugar control, the breaking down of old hormones, the manufacture and breakdown of cholesterol and the absorption of protein, fats and carbohydrates. If the liver is struggling, absorption of nutrients will be compromised and blood-sugar levels will fluctuate. Cravings get worse and weight piles on.

11) Thyroid - The thyroid gland controls the metabolism of your entire body by regulating energy production and oxygen uptake. Continual stress can negatively affect the thyroid gland, depressing its normal function. Overstimulation of the thyroid is caused by the Consumption of sugar, coffee and alcohol, sending the thyroid into an exhausted state, which can cause weight gain.

12) Water retention - Water retention can be a sign that you are dehydrated meaning the body holds onto water for fear of becoming further dehydrated. It is also a sign that there may be excess sodium in the body. This needs to be flushed out with extra fluids .Vegetable juices are perfect due to their high potassium content-potassium is needed to balance sodium in the body..

SYMPTOMS OF OBESITY

BMI Category - Health Risk

18 - <25- Minimal

25 - <27- Low

27 - <30- Moderate

30 - <35- High

35 - <40- Very high

>40- Extremely high

BMI less than 19 indicates mal-nutrition, while people with BMIs 25 up to 30 are considered overweight for their age and sex. BMI over 40 suggests morbid obesity. The BMI is a very sensitive indicator of obesity for people between the ages of 19 and 70 years.

However, BMI is not suitable in Elderly people with general debility, Children growing up very fast, Pregnant or lactating women, and in some cases Body builders and athletes

Symptoms and Diagnosis of Overweight

The world health organization (WHO) has categorized obesity as a metabolic disorder. Often obese people approach their doctors when other health conditions worsen due to obesity.

Signs and symptoms that suggest that it is high time to tackle obesity are:

• No improvement in Diabetes in spite of medications and you are overweight. Remember that all obese persons do not develop diabetes, but 80% of diabetics are obese.

• There's a trouble conceiving. Impotence and infertility are conditions worsened by obesity.

• The menstrual cycles have become irregular. Too often or too late.

• Development of high blood pressure or existing high pressures are not responding well to medications.

• Increased daytime sleepiness or sleep apnoea.

COMPLICATIONS OF OBESITY

Being overweight puts you at increased risk of developing:

• Cardio-vascular problems including high blood pressure, heart disease, heart attacks, strokes and high cholesterol.

• Diabetes -being overweight makes you ten times more likely to develop type 2 diabetes.

• Respiratory problems -excess weight puts an added strain on the lungs so that even minor activities such as climbing the stairs or carrying shopping become difficult.

• Sleep apnoea and snoring are also increased in overweight people. These both lead to fitful sleep and tiredness during the day.

• Musculo-skeletal problems - carrying extra weight puts a huge strain on the skeleton, joints, muscles and nerves. Being overweight increases the risk and severity of arthritic disorders, gout and backache.

• Digestive problems -reflux or heartburn, and gas, are more common in overweight people as the abdominal fat around the stomach increases the pressure on the digestive system, causing stomach acid to rise up into the oesophagus.

• Urinary incontinence - can result from the weight of the abdomen weakening the valve in the bladder. This can lead to leakage of urine, especially when laughing, sneezing or coughing

• Venal problems - excess weight can increase the pressure on the veins, leading to varicose veins and skin ulcers.

• Female hormone imbalances - being overweight increases the risk of infertility, PMS, menopausal symptoms and problems during pregnancy.

• Cancer - being overweight may increase the risk of developing cancers of the uterus, gallbladder, cervix, ovary, prostate, breast and colon.

• Gallbladder disease- the risk increases as your weight increases.

• Obesity increases chances of skin infections. Fungal infections are common in skin folds of the abdomen, torso and lower limbs.

ACTION PLAN WITH HOLISTIC HEALING FOR OBESITY

PREVENTION AND LIFE STYLE CHANGES IN OBESITY

Excess calories consumed end-up being stored as fat. A good diet plan must have foods high in nutritive value and low in empty calories.

• Add more high fiber foods. Vegetables, fruits, beans and whole grains are high in fibers which prevent excess absorption of carbohydrates from the intestines. Have plenty of red, yellow and orange fruits which are high in antioxidants.

• Slow down. Eating slowly is one method that can help take off pounds. Fast eaters often eat beyond their true level of fullness.

• Early to bed.- The earlier you get to bed, the better you will feel. The liver and gallbladder conduct their detox work generally between the hours of 11pm and 2am, Being tired slows your metabolism and can affect your food choices.

• Eat more, not less. Eating less than is required to support your basal metabolism will slow your metabolism down. It helps to prevent bingeing because you never feel famished.

• Avoid having animal fats. These are high in saturated fats which lead to conditions like high blood pressures and diabetes. Animal fats are very rich in cholesterols which can cause heart diseases along with obesity.

• Go through your kitchen cupboards, fridge and freezer and throw out salty convenience foods, fatty foods, sugary drinks, chemical snacks, foods with unpronounceable ingredients you can't decipher, hydrogenated oils and processed foods.

• Change your snack mindset. Stop thinking of quick snacks as biscuits, chocolates, crisps etc. Try to start associating fast, on-the-run snacks with easy healthy alternatives like fruits, freshly squeezed juices, nuts and seeds or carrot sticks and sugar snap peas.

• Drink plenty of water. Recent studies have shown that simply having more water can increase your metabolic rates thus help in burning more calories in the form of fat.

• Break the fast. Always eat something healthy and substantial for breakfast. This is the time period when your stomach energies and digestive enzymes are at their strongest. Fresh fruit, oatmeal, millet or quinoa porridge are all good morning choices.

• Eat when calm. You physically can't digest food properly if you are upset or have just had an argument.

• Maintain a balance between caloric intake and energy expenditure. It is true that obese people consume more calories than they require and burn lesser calories. So an ideal balance needs to be maintained.

• Start being more active.

• Walk more, use the car less often.

• Avoid using the car for short distances -> try cycling or walking instead.

• Climb stairs instead of always using the elevators.

• Pursue active recreational sports when home rather than watching television or surfing the net.

CONNECTION OF OBESITY WITH MIND-BODY-SOUL/ EMOTIONAL CAUSES OF OBESITY

Your mind is the most powerful tool you have.

Every thought you get, causes changes throughout your body.

Neutral, calming or happy thoughts have the opposite effect.

It is always a set of emotions or an emotional state that manifests itself in the form of a disease.

Unresolved problems from childhood and our teen years often manifest as comfort eating in adulthood. Anaesthetizing emotional pain with rubbish food is a no-win situation for your health- but you probably don't even know you're doing it. A common result is that you end up with specific diets, which can be a real blow to self-esteem and confidence when the diets don't seem to work in the long run. It's crucial to think of your body and mind when embracing health. Everything is connected. Recognize and acknowledge any negative thoughts; then let them go. Allow your thoughts, words and actions to always be kind, positive and loving.

The key emotions that generally tend to become the root cause of Obesity are as follows.

Insecurity... you have some kind of fearfulness within you and a felt need for protection. There's a real need for something to rely upon or to lean on- an always available ally, and you find this in food.

You feel starved for relevance in your life. From the very beginning, you seem to been surrounded by people, systems, environment, activities, requirement and situations that do not relate to where they are coming from. There is an emotional deprivation from deep within. Hence you responded by "Self-Medication" in the form of food intake as a means of filling the hole inside.

Your weight has the effect of assimilating anger from within and from without. It acts an as energy-absorbing shield and you use it to avoid vulnerability.

You have been in a position where you could do little or nothing to fend off the invasions of the dysfunction in your family and so you tried to develop means to insulate yourself.

There have been clear messages from your family to you to keep yourself under control....or else.... !.. As a result, you've learnt to suppress your feelings and are unable to express what you need and desire. You are avoiding being in touch with yourself as you had been hurt badly in your denial-dominated family.

There may be "food addiction" side effect or grief-avoiding holding back of an "Ocean of tears". The result can be over eating for self-sustenance through oral-stimulation due to self-rejection, love-starvation and fear of loss.

You tend to be quite reactive in your feelings about experiencing things intensely and do a systematic refusal to engage in emotional investment. There is a lot of resentment and you are intolerant and unforgiving in your orientation.

Due to grief holding, there is a resultant water retention. This may have been due to the message you had been given that you had no right to exist and that you should not expect any sustenance and nurturance. As a result you turn to food in an effort to find the "so called" nurturance and as your only source of self-nourishment.

Obesity can also be a form of power-projection. There is a control and domination to find protection. You may be oversensitive and self-reassuringly self-protective via increasing your apparent strength and size in a "throwing your weight around" pattern. Somewhere it gives you the feeling of being powerful, strong, impactful, self-sufficient and invulnerable. You may feel that you need it as a function of your intimidating experience which was full of domineering, oppressive, authoritarian parenting.

There is a childlike need for security, lot of unexpressed longing and holding of unpleasant memories.

In some cases it could be a cover for hidden anger and resistance to forgiving.

To sum it up, Obesity reflects insecurity and love-rejection, along with feelings of deprivation, scarcity and loss. It also involves lovelessness, loneliness and a pattern of comfort-seeking.

Here are ways to master the mind/body connection to handle emotions in case of obesity

1. Relax. Relaxation is an active state of deep rest where the mind is quiet and the body is physiologically calm.

Meditation, guided visualization, body scanning and slow, diaphragmatic breathing are some of the many techniques that achieve relaxation.

2. Stop taking stress. Stress is heavily implicated in any disease. Review your life and see if you can avoid the causes of stress or change your response to them. Stop worrying about the past or future and live in the present. As that is all you can influence.

3. Express your emotions. Emotions are energy. Suppressing them takes physical effort that can cause pain.

Repressed emotions cause poor health. Suppressing emotion also keeps you stuck, unable to move past what you are avoiding. By contrast, writing in a journal or talking to someone about how you feel, and even just sitting quietly and "mindfully" to fully experience and acknowledge the feeling, all lead to feeling better both emotionally and physically.

4. Try to be cheerful. When you laugh your body produces endorphins, the body's natural healers.

5. Process your trauma. There could be a connection between earlier experiences of psychological trauma or chronic pain or illness of the past.
