The thyroid gland is a butterfly-shaped gland situated in the front of the neck and it produces certain essential hormones.

The thyroid hormones affect growth and development and also control the way your body uses energy. Hence deficiency of the same can have widespread consequences on the whole body making you feel weak and tired besides a host of other symptoms.

Hypothyroidism is a condition that affects almost 10 % of women worldwide and almost 3-5 % of the general population. A condition that afflicts millions of people yet goes so unnoticed in so many cases.

PHYSICAL CAUSES OF HYPOTHYROIDISM

In hypothyroidism there may be a lack of thyroid hormones or there may be a problem with the conversion of thyroid hormones into their active form.

Another contributory factor may be the presence of thyroid antibodies that suppress thyroid function.

It is not known why any of the above would happen.

Lack of certain nutrients needed for thyroid hormone production is one contributory factor.

Lack of exercise, food intolerances and disturbances in the rest of the endocrine system may also be some of the causative factors.

SYMPTOMS OF HYPOTHYROIDISM

As the thyroid hormones control our metabolic rate (the rate at which we burn up calories for energy) a deficiency of them can result in :

• Fatigue,

• Weight gain,

• Low appetite,

• Feeling cold,

• Slow heart rate,

• Weakness,

• Constipation and

• Depression.

Other symptoms often associated with hypothyroidism include:

• Dry, yellowy-coloured skin,

• Goitre (an enlargement of the thyroid),

• Hair loss,

• Loss of the outer third of the eyebrows and brain fog.

Hypothyroidism is one of the commonest causes that can make you feel persistently weak and tired.

ACTION PLAN WITH HOLISTIC HEALING FOR HYPOTHYROIDISM

PREVENTION AND LIFE STYLE CHANGES IN HYPOTHYROIDISM

• Moderate exercise daily is essential. Walking is a good place to start if you don't currently do any exercise. Start with 20 minutes a day; swing your arms naturally and aim to get your heart rate up without actually panting when you finish.

• Learn to manage stress. Hypothyroidism is often linked to stress, so review your life and see what is stressing you.

• Yoga, tai chi, meditation and breathing exercises are all techniques that can help.

• When you get up in the morning, before you jump out of bed and start your day, take five minutes to just be still. Sit on the end of your bed, close your eyes, place your right hand on your stomach and simply breathe in through your nose and out through your mouth very slowly. Feel the breath in your stomach. Do this 20 times. Monitor your blood pressure. It is important to monitor your blood pressure to see how you are getting on. Do not be alarmed if your blood pressure rises initially. This can be a result of sodium being released from the cells as you replace it with magnesium and potassium.

• Do not give up on the diet because you think it is not working. This is a sure sign that your body is restoring balance.

• Stick with it and you should start to see the readings coming down and overall health improving.

• Treat yourself to essential oil massages. Essential oils are absorbed through the skin and can have a calming effect on the nervous system which controls blood pressure and stress reactions.

• Eat a low-salt diet that emphasizes fruits, vegetables and whole grains

• Limit the amount of animal fats and use good fats in moderation

• Lose extra pounds and maintain a healthy weight

• Quit smoking

• Exercise on most days of the week for at least 30 minutes

• Drink alcohol in moderation, if at all

CONNECTION OF HYPOTHYROIDISM WITH MIND-BODY-SOUL/ EMOTIONAL CAUSES OF HYPOTHYROIDISM

Your mind is the most powerful tool you have.

Every thought you get, causes changes throughout your body.

Neutral, calming or happy thoughts have the opposite effect.

It is always a set of emotions or an emotional state that manifests itself in the form of a disease.

The key emotions that generally co-exist so as to become the root cause of Insomnia are as follows.

You may not have had the support and love you needed in order to build your self-confidence. You felt that no one believed in you as those close to you didn't acknowledge your good qualities. Instead influential people around you tended to focus on your weaknesses.

Influential people may have tried to verbally insult or offend you with the intention of motivating you to do better. But this tactic had the opposite effect. This may have caused you to feel frozen, stuck and unable to make progress. You want to succeed, however the support is causing you to sabotage your success.

You seem to be still living in the past in the "What if" scenario... Instead of being proactive, you try to dwell in the past. You have a fear of success and moving away from your comfort zone in which you feel safe and protected from any potential verbal attacks or criticism.

At one point of time, you start manifesting stagnation, lethargy, ennui and nihilism.

You begin in creating for yourself a hopeless and defeatist personality with a strong feeling that things never actually work.

You may have felt overwhelmed and strung out by too much pressure. You may also be getting a feeling that what was expected out of you is out of your reach. You'd rather give up than face failure and disappointment.

Here are ways to master the mind/body connection to keep a check on Hypothyroidism

1. Relax. Relaxation is an active state of deep rest where the mind is quiet and the body is physiologically calm.

Meditation, guided visualization, body scanning and slow, diaphragmatic breathing are some of the many techniques that achieve relaxation.

2. Stop taking stress. Stress is heavily implicated in any disease. Review your life and see if you can avoid the causes of stress or change your response to them. Stop worrying about the past or future and live in the present. As that is all you can influence.

3. Express your emotions. Emotions are energy. Suppressing them takes physical effort that can cause pain.

Repressed emotions cause poor health. Suppressing emotion also keeps you stuck, unable to move past what you are avoiding. By contrast, writing in a journal or talking to someone about how you feel, and even just sitting quietly and "mindfully" to fully experience and acknowledge the feeling, all lead to feeling better both emotionally and physically.

4. Try to be cheerful. When you laugh your body produces endorphins, the body's natural healers.

5. Process your trauma. There could be a connection between earlier experiences of psychological trauma or chronic pain or illness of the past.

Our Talk therapy-Counselling sessions are based on guiding you, through finding and resolving the root cause. The main aim of our therapy is to make you realise and understand from the beginning that your identity is on the soul level and that your body and biological makeup is just a part of your physical life experience.

They not help you unlock and resolve your emotional block, but are also extremely effective in relieving stress as they target and are based on the realm of the reality plane of life. Harnessing your brain to heal your emotions does transform your life!

TREATMENT OF HYPOTHYROIDISM BY NATURAL HOLISTIC APPROACH

1) HOMOEOPATHIC TREATMENT OF HYPOTHYROIDISM

Homeopathy is one of the most popular holistic systems of medicine. The selection of remedy is based upon the theory of individualization and symptoms similarity by using holistic approach. This is the only way through which a state of complete health can be regained by removing all the sign and symptoms from which the patient is suffering. The aim of homeopathy is not only to treat the outward symptoms of the physical disease but to address its underlying cause and individual susceptibility.

The good news is that once detected, Hypothyroidism can be effectively treated and the disease can be kept under control. Conventional medication entails taking supplements of the hormones whereas homeopathy stimulates better functioning of the thyroid gland so that it can produce the hormones on its own

As far as therapeutic medication is concerned, certain medicines are available for Hypothyroidism treatment in Homoeopathy that can be selected on the basis of cause, sensation, modalities of the complaints

Few of the Commonly Indicated remedies for Hypothyroidism are:

Natrum Muriaticum,

Kali Carbonicum,

Thyroidinum,

Carcinocin,

Calcaria Carbonicum,

Iodum,

Calcaria Iodum,

Thuja Occidentalis,

Sepia,

Silicia

***However it should be noted that all homoeopathic medicines (except few external applications) can be prescribed only with specific indications and hence should be taken under medical supervision or as directed by the doctor.

Only if the homoeopathic medicine is prescribed on the basis of symptom-similarity, it gives good results.

Self-prescription in Homoeopathy or any other system of medicine should be avoided.

2) DIET/NUTRITION IN HYPOTHYROIDISM

Diet in Hypothyroidism :

• Sea vegetables which contain iodine needed for the production of thyroid hormones.

• Brazil nuts as they are one of the best sources of selenium which is also needed for thyroid function.

• Fresh fruit, vegetables, nuts, seeds, whole grains and pulses contain the essential fats, B vitamins, zinc, vitamin C and magnesium.

• Thyroid malfunction is often the result of chronic adrenal stress which leads to deficiencies in the above.

Foods to be Avoided in Hypothyroidism

• Wheat. The gliadin in wheat can be toxic to the thyroid so is best avoided. Some people do best without the other gluten grains as well (oats, rye, barley, kamut and spelt).

• Raw cruciferous vegetables (broccoli, cabbage, kale, cauliflower, swede), soya and millet. These can all be goitre genic (suppress thyroid function). The cruciferous vegetables are fine if cooked, and fermented soya in moderation is fine (miso, tempeh and tamari).

• Avoiding challenging products like salt, caffeine and dairy for a while helps.

• Sugar, refined carbohydrates , processed foods and alcohol are all empty calories and can lead to easy weight gain.

• Fluorine and chlorine. These are both chemically similar to iodine and can displace iodine in the thyroid. Fluorine is found in many toothpastes, tap water and tea. Chlorine is found in tap water and swimming pools. It is best to filter your water and use fluoride-free toothpaste.

Role of Water in Hypothyroidism :

• Drink Water at least 8 glasses daily. Fluid levels are vital for the whole endocrine system, including the thyroid.

VITAMINS AND MINERALS FOR HYPOTHYROIDISM

Some supplements support common deficiencies in people with hypothyroidism. The need for these depends on your levels of vitamins and minerals. Some potentially beneficial supplements include:

Vitamin B-12: Autoimmune thyroid disease is associated with autoimmune disorders, pernicious anemia, and atrophic gastritis, which can cause malabsorption of vitamin B-12. A lack of B-12 can cause symptoms like fatigue.

Zinc: Zinc supplementation to some extent can affect thyroid function.

Selenium: In combination with zinc, selenium may have some effect on thyroid function. Selenium facilitates the conversion of T4 to the active T3.

Iodine: Thyroid hormones require iodine for production, but it must be obtained through diet or supplements.

NATURAL /HERBAL REMEDIES FOR HYPOTHYROIDISM

Fucus vesiculosus, alternatively known as Bladderwrack, is the herb most commonly associated with the treatment of hypothyroid. This is a kelp and seaweed product that is often used in hypothyroidism due to the high iodine content.

90% of the diseases are a result of build-up of unresolved negative emotions and pre-programming of your mind as discussed above. Your soul tries to express these unresolved negative emotions first through your thoughts and feelings. If you fail to listen to the messages that are crying out to be heard, these messages become stronger and then harder for you to ignore. They then express and manifest themselves by means of pain, discomfort or ill-health.

Along with Emotional management, Spiritual programming of your mind is a must to unwind yourself from the clutches of the negative emotions you've held so long which has ultimately led to the dis-ease.

This we achieve by means of:

1- Facilitated Spiritual Detox

2- Meditation

3- Identifying the imbalance and healing at the level of the Chakra

4- Energy healing

After-care maintenance and guidance once the goal is achieved (reversal and cure of disease)

The aim is to gain proper balance in life by achieving a permanent healing at the level of Body Mind and Soul.

We at NIDHIVAN, instead to targeting the disease or problem on the surface, aim to treat the innermost root cause of the disease, so as to achieve a permanent cure
