Diabetes (from the Greek word- Fountain of Sugar), is characterised by high blood sugar (glucose) level. This results from a defect in the production of a hormone Insulin.

• The number of people with diabetes rose from 108 million in 1980 to 422 million in 2014. Prevalence has been rising more rapidly in low- and middle-income countries than in high-income countries.

• Diabetes is a major cause of blindness, kidney failure, heart attacks, stroke and lower limb amputation.

• Between 2000 and 2016, there was a 5% increase in premature mortality from diabetes.

• In 2019, an estimated 1.5 million deaths were directly caused by diabetes.

• A healthy diet, regular physical activity, maintaining a normal body weight and avoiding tobacco use are ways to prevent or delay the onset of type 2 diabetes.

• Diabetes can be treated and its consequences avoided or delayed with the correction of the emotional root cause, relevant diet, physical activity, holistic medication along with regular screening for complications.

Untreated high blood sugar from diabetes can damage your nerves, eyes, kidneys, and other organs.

THERE ARE TWO TYPES OF DIABETES:

TYPE ONE DIABETES :

This is also called Insulin-dependent-diabetes or the Juvenile-onset-diabetes. It is an autoimmune disease. The immune system attacks and destroys cells in the pancreas which manufactures Insulin. .

Causes:

Autoimmune disease,

Genetic Predisposition,

Certain viruses.

Symptoms of type 1 diabetes can include:

• extreme hunger

• increased thirst

• unintentional weight loss

• frequent urination

• blurry vision

• tiredness

It may also result in mood changes.

About 10 percent of people with diabetes have this type.

TYPE TWO DIABETES :

This is also called Non-Insulin-Dependent Diabetes or the adult-onset-diabetes. It occurs when your body becomes resistant to insulin, and sugar builds up in your blood.

Prediabetes occurs when your blood sugar is higher than normal, but it's not high enough for a diagnosis of type 2 diabetes.

Gestational diabetes is high blood sugar during pregnancy. Insulin-blocking hormones produced by the placenta cause this type of diabetes.

Causes of type 2 Diabetes

Type 2 diabetes stems from a combination of genetics and lifestyle factors.

Being overweight or obese increases your risk too. Carrying extra weight, especially in your belly, makes your cells more resistant to the effects of insulin on your blood sugar.

Symptoms of type 2 diabetes can include:

• increased hunger

• increased thirst

• increased urination

• blurry vision

• tiredness

• sores that are slow to heal

It may also cause recurring infections. This is because elevated glucose levels make it harder for the body to heal.

Symptoms in men

In addition to the general symptoms of diabetes, men with diabetes may have a decreased sex drive, erectile dysfunction (ED), and poor muscle strength.

Symptoms in women

Women with diabetes can also have symptoms such as urinary tract infections, yeast infections, and dry, itchy skin.

Risk Factors

One is likely to get diabetes if:

• A close family member has diabetes

• You are overweight

• If you have High blood pressure or High Cholesterol

• If you've had a heart attack or a stroke.

• Polycystic ovary syndrome in women.

• Sedentary Lifestyle.

Complications of Diabetes

Being overweight makes you 10 times more likely to develop type 2 Diabetes.

Diabetes is a major cause of Kidney failure and adult onset blindness.

It can also lead to Diabetic neuropathy.

ACTION PLAN WITH HOLISTIC HEALING FOR DIABETES

If you have been diagnosed with Diabetes, your aim should be to try to achieve normal blood glucose levels.

The following Holistic healing measures will help you to keep your blood sugar levels under control, maintain energy and lose weight.

PREVENTION AND LIFE STYLE CHANGES IN DIABETES

Simple lifestyle measures have been shown to be effective in preventing or delaying the onset of type 2 diabetes. To help prevent type 2 diabetes and its complications, people should:

• Achieve and maintain a healthy body weight; Reduce your waistline. Excess abdominal fat makes the body less sensitive to insulin. Do not try to lose weight quickly. It should be done over a gradual period of time with an aim of losing one to two pounds a week.

• Be physically active - doing at least 30 minutes of regular, moderate-intensity activity on most days.

• Eat a healthy diet, avoiding sugar and saturated fats;

• Get enough sleep. People who get less than 6 hours sleep per night are less sensitive to insulin than those who get 8 hours which leads to blood sugar highs and lows.

• Avoid tobacco use - smoking increases the risk of diabetes and cardiovascular disease.

CONNECTION OF DIABETES WITH MIND-BODY-SOUL/ EMOTIONAL CAUSES OF DIABETES.

Your mind is the most powerful tool you have.

Every thought you get, causes changes throughout your body.

Neutral, calming or happy thoughts have the opposite effect.

It is always a set of emotions or an emotional state that manifests itself in the form of a disease.

The key emotions that generally co-exist so as to become the root cause of Diabetes are as follows.

Diabetes is a metabolic disturbance due to lack of insulin secreted by the pancreas, but did you know there are hidden feelings behind it?

Diabetes was once known as glycosuria-meaning,' sugar run-out'. If we replace the word sugar with love it translates to 'love run-out'. Love passes straight through a diabetic, just as sugar has. The result is a strong unsatisfied desire for love, along with an inability to accept love and absorb it unconditionally.

When an aspect of us is missing it can result in a sense of deep sadness and sorrow with no sweetness left within us to enjoy life.

There is a belief in diabetics that they have had insufficient emotional support, with a feeling of loss, deprivation of love, together with the starvation of affection.

Diabetics want to love yet do not trust themselves to actively pursue. Therefore, they long for it all the more yet are unable to get it because they have never learnt to love themselves. As a result they feel as if they are alone in a hostile world.

Sometimes, there will be a feeling that the quality of life has been taken away from them.

Diabetes has a way of storing pain, complicated by feeling ashamed of something you did in the past. Emptiness can create a feeling of having a great need to control.

You have become overwhelmed by your responsibilities which causes you to feel disempowered and defeated. You need to take responsibility for your own happiness before you can change this belief and feel successful in your life.

Here are ways to master the mind/body connection to control Diabetes

1. Relax. Relaxation is an active state of deep rest where the mind is quiet and the body is physiologically calm.

Meditation, guided visualization, body scanning and slow, diaphragmatic breathing are some of the many techniques that achieve relaxation.

2. Stop taking stress. Stress is heavily implicated in any disease. Review your life and see if you can avoid the causes of stress or change your response to them. Stop worrying about the past or future and live in the present. As that is all you can influence.

3. Express your emotions. Emotions are energy. Suppressing them takes physical effort that can cause pain.

Repressed emotions cause poor health. Suppressing emotion also keeps you stuck, unable to move past what you are avoiding. By contrast, writing in a journal or talking to someone about how you feel, and even just sitting quietly and "mindfully" to fully experience and acknowledge the feeling, all lead to feeling better both emotionally and physically.

4. Try to be cheerful. When you laugh your body produces endorphins, the body's natural healers.

5. Process your trauma. There could be a connection between earlier experiences of psychological trauma or chronic pain or illness of the past.

TREATMENT OF DIABETES BY NATURAL HOLISTIC APPROACH

1) HOMOEOPATHIC TREATMENT OF DIABETES

In Homeopathy , which is one of the most popular holistic systems of medicine the selection of remedy is based upon the theory of individualization and symptoms similarity by using holistic approach. This is the only way through which a state of complete health can be regained by removing all the signs and symptoms from which the patient is suffering. The aim of homeopathy is not only to treat diabetes but to address its underlying cause and individual susceptibility.

As far as therapeutic medication in Homoeopathy is concerned, several medicines are available for diabetes, that can be selected on the basis of cause, sensation, modalities of the complaints

Homeopathic treatment can help improve the general health of a person with diabetes

This can be helped by administering a "constitutional" remedy, based on the totality of the patient's symptoms and characteristics. The effect will be to improve the general sense of well-being, to improve diabetes control, and maybe to lower the insulin or drug requirements

Commonly Indicated remedies are :

• Abroma Augusta

• Cephalandra Indica

• Phaseolus

• Phosphorus

• Syzygium Jambolanum

***However it should be noted that all homoeopathic medicines (except few external applications) can be prescribed only with specific indications and hence should be taken under medical supervision or as directed by the doctor.

Only if the homoeopathic medicine is prescribed on the basis of symptom-similarity, it gives good results.

Self-prescription in Homoeopathy or any other system of medicine should be avoided.

2) DIET/NUTRITION IN DIABETES

Diet:

1) Whole foods. Choosing complex carbohydrates instead of simple carbohydrates.

So opt for brown rice instead of white rice, wholemeal bread instead of white bread. Complex carbohydrates are high in fibres, Vitamins and minerals, which are important factors in helping to regulate blood sugar.

Refined carbohydrates have had their fibre and nutrients removed, and act in a similar way to refined sugar when eaten, raising your blood sugar quickly and aggravating diabetic symptoms.

2) Fresh raw and steamed vegetables. These are low in calories and fat and high in essential vitamins, minerals and phytonutrients. Some vegetables, such as white potatoes, parsnips, beetroot and carrots, are high in naturally occurring sugars. So always eat these with protein foods such as beans or lentils so that you don't get a blood-sugar rush.

3) Fibre-rich foods, as fibre helps to slow the release of glucose into the bloodstream. It can help to reduce high cholesterol, common in diabetics, and can help to keep your weight down by making you feel fuller quicker. High-fibre foods include brown rice, oats, beans, lentils, and flax seeds.

4) Onions are rich in chromium, important for regulating blood-sugar levels.

5) Protein which slows down the digestion of carbohydrates and the rate at which they enter the bloodstream. Choose protein sources that are low in saturated fat such as tofu, nuts, seeds, quinoa, beans, lentils and whole grains. Mung beans are a great antidiabetic , slow-release food.

6)Apples. When it comes to beating diabetes, there is nothing forbidden about this particular fruit. Apple peel contains quercetin, a flavonoid Whose antioxidant effect has been found to reduce diabetes.

8) Asparagus which is an excellent source of glutathione, an antioxidant compound that can help to keep your blood-sugar levels stable.

9) Soya beans. Not only are these members of the legume family a complete source of protein, they also provide phytoestrogens, isoflavones and saponins that can help to balance your blood sugar.

10) Essential fats as these help to improve glucose tolerance, and reduce high glucose tolerance, and reduce high triglyceride and cholesterol levels. Good sources of these facts include oily fish, flaxseed oil, dark leafy green vegetables, seeds, nuts and tofu.

Avoid:

1) Sugar and all foods that contain sugar, like biscuits and cakes. If you want something sweet, opt for fresh fruits in moderation. Blackberries, blueberries, raspberries, cherries and grapefruit are good choices as they are not overly sweet.

2) Hidden sugar. Sugar comes in many guises including sucrose, dextrose, glucose, maltose, lactose, corn syrup, golden syrup, honey and treacle- to name but a few. So always check the ingredients list on food products - even items like tinned soups and baked beans often contain these.

3) Bad fats. Avoid fried foods, and fast foods. These increase the risk of type 2 diabetes.

4) Stimulants such as coffee, tea and cigarettes.

5) Alcohol. If you really must have a drink, have something to eat first.

Organic red wine in probably the best choice as is contains the mineral chromium, which aids blood-sugar balance. Limit your alcohol consumption to no more than one or two drinks twice a week.

6) Salt. Use herbs and spices to flavour your food instead.

Important tips:

• Beware of food claims.

• Just because the label on a product states "Unsweetened" , or " No added Sugar" , it may still contain ingredients that are high in naturally occurring sugar ( like dried fruits or fruit juice concentrates) or unhealthy artificial sweeteners.

• Do not skip meals. Eating regularly throughout the day will help to balance your blood sugar levels.

Water:

• Water. Drink at least 8 glasses of water daily.

• Herbal teas include nettle, peppermint and camomile.

Your soul tries to express these unresolved negative emotions first through your thoughts and feelings. If you fail to listen to the messages that are crying out to be heard, these messages become stronger and then harder for you to ignore. They then express and manifest themselves by means of pain, discomfort or ill-health.

Along with Emotional management, Spiritual programming of your mind is a must to unwind yourself from the clutches of the negative emotions you've held so long which has ultimately led to the dis-ease.

This we achieve by means of:

1- Facilitated Spiritual Detox
