MIND IMAGERY AND VISUALIZATION

Mind imagery or visualization basically means forming pictures in our mind.

It is a method by which our mind controls the reactions of our bodies to the environment by constantly communicating with it.

As you gain more understanding about it, you gain increased insights into the working of mind-body and you can use images deliberately to promote changes in the body.

Images are representations in the mind of what we perceive through our senses. They are formed as we experience the world around us but they can also be summoned up from our memory or made up with the help of our past experiences.

E.g.; You can imagine a tune you have heard before, or get acquainted with the smell of a rose as soon as you think about it, or the taste and the thought of your favourite dish tempts you to visualize it, in your imagination you hear the sound of birds chirping, you see the drops of dew on the grass, you feel the breeze on your skin.

Which means that anything associated with imagination, is suspect with our culture, so you may be reassured to know that images are the product of real physical events in our brain.

In imagery, using all of your senses is what creates such a powerfully relaxing experience, and this is why it's so useful in managing stress and coping with difficult situations.

It is widely accepted within the medical profession that the mind and body are an integrated system and that the mind plays a significant role in both the aetiology of disease and recovery.” Mental imagery has been reported to trigger neurophysiological changes, improve immune response and have an effect on the autonomic nervous system

The types of imagery used in healing may include:
