Bronchitis is an inflammatory disorder which may start as a dry cough followed by catarrh, phlegm and a rattling cough.

Inflammation in the bronchioles is a sign that the immune system is struggling to keep things in balance.

Bronchitis is more likely to occur after a cold and when you are run down.

Chronic bronchitis can cause enormous discomfort to the lungs as you are always coughing.

You may experience difficulty in breathing. If you are or have been a Smoker it may not be bronchitis, but a condition called emphysema.

Acute bronchitis should not last more than two weeks.

CAUSES OF BRONCHITIS

Some of the causes of Bronchitis include

Smoking

Weakened immune system.

Viruses.

Allergies.

Asthma.

Bad colds.

Hospital stays.

SYMPTOMS OF BRONCHITIS

Signs and symptoms for either acute or chronic bronchitis may include:

• Cough

• Production of mucus (sputum), which can be clear, white, yellowish-grey or green in colour - rarely, it may be streaked with blood

• Shortness of breath

• Slight fever and chills

• Fatigue

• Chest discomfort

If you have acute bronchitis, you might have cold symptoms, such as a mild headache or body aches. While these symptoms usually improve in about a week, you may have a nagging cough that lingers for several weeks.

Chronic bronchitis is defined as a productive cough that lasts at least three months, with recurring bouts occurring for at least two consecutive years.

If you have chronic bronchitis, you're likely to have periods when your cough or other symptoms worsen. At those times, you may have an acute infection on top of chronic bronchitis.

RISK FACTORS OF BRONCHITIS

Factors that increase your risk of bronchitis include:

Cigarette smoke. People who smoke or who live with a smoker are at higher risk of both acute bronchitis and chronic bronchitis.

Low resistance. This may result from another acute illness, such as a cold, or from a chronic condition that compromises your immune system. Older adults, infants and young children have greater vulnerability to infection.

Exposure to irritants on the job. Your risk of developing bronchitis is greater if you work around certain lung irritants, such as grains or textiles, or are exposed to chemical fumes.

Gastric reflux. Repeated bouts of severe heartburn can irritate your throat and make you more prone to developing bronchitis.

Complications

Although a single episode of bronchitis usually isn't cause for concern, it can lead to pneumonia in some people. Repeated bouts of bronchitis may suggest that you have chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Prevention

To reduce your risk of bronchitis, follow these tips:

Avoid cigarette smoke. Cigarette smoke increases your risk of chronic bronchitis.

Get vaccinated. Many cases of acute bronchitis result from influenza, a virus. Getting a yearly flu vaccine can help protect you from getting the flu. You may also want to consider vaccination that protects against some types of pneumonia.

Wash your hands. To reduce your risk of catching a viral infection, wash your hands frequently and get in the habit of using alcohol-based hand sanitizers.

Wear a surgical mask. If you have COPD, you might consider wearing a face mask at work if you're exposed to dust or fumes, and when you're going to be among crowds, such as while traveling.

COMPLICATIONS OF BRONCHITIS

The major complications of chronic bronchitis are:

• difficulty breathing, sometimes severe,

• respiratory failure,

• pneumonia,

• Enlargement and weakness of right heart ventricle of the heart caused by lung disease,

• pneumothorax (collection of air or gas in lung which may cause lung collapse),

• polycythaemia (abnormally high concentration of red blood cells )

• chronic obstructive pulmonary disease

• emphysema,

• chronic advancement of the disease

CONNECTION OF BRONCHITIS WITH MIND-BODY-SOUL/ EMOTIONAL CAUSES OF BRONCHITIS

Your mind is the most powerful tool you have.

Every thought you get, causes changes throughout your body.

Neutral, calming or happy thoughts have the opposite effect.

It is always a set of emotions or an emotional state that manifests itself in the form of a disease.

The key emotions that generally co-exist so as to become the root cause of Bronchitis are as follows.

Bronchitis usually start when people overwork themselves, enduring long periods of stress.

You feel challenged by the amount of guilt, regret or resentment you are holding on to.

You feel that all your negative experiences have made you stronger and that your strength is based on how much you have survived. This illusion of strength and testing your endurance comes at a price- You are exhausted.

You feel challenged when faced with the topic of forgiveness. Forgiving somebody would mean that you are giving your power away. Forgiveness might be seen as a weakness. You feel defeated by recent challenges in life. You have given, every project and goal your best.

Your need for praise have been met by rejection or a very unsatisfactory neutral response. You feel emotionally depleted and undervalued. You feel that you cannot do anything right and are ridiculed for keeping up with the expectations and demands of influential people.

You don't allow yourself to explore your emotions, instead you suppress your sadness and need for acceptance. You may have a fear that if you allow yourself to feel your emotions, then you will lose the control of your cool temper and people might see the volcano that you have been hiding within you.

There's fear, tension, anxiety and a feeling of things being very unsettled.

Sometimes, you feel as if the world around you is not a safe place to live and that you can even be attacked by friends or family. There may be deep depression and despair feelings to get off their chest along with anger and rage.

You might be intensely frustrated and angry about yourself but are afraid to express and let go of it. This is all a result of an inflamed family environment that was saturated with silent or not so silent, yelling arguments.

Here are some of the ways to master the mind/body connection in the cure of Bronchitis.

1. Relax. Relaxation is an active state of deep rest where the mind is quiet and the body is physiologically calm.

Meditation, guided visualization, body scanning and slow, diaphragmatic breathing are some of the many techniques that achieve relaxation.

2. Stop taking stress. Stress is heavily implicated in any disease. Review your life and see if you can avoid the causes of stress or change your response to them. Stop worrying about the past or future and live in the present. As that is all you can influence.

3. Express your emotions. Emotions are energy. Suppressing them takes physical effort that can cause pain.

Repressed emotions cause poor health. Suppressing emotion also keeps you stuck, unable to move past what you are avoiding. By contrast, writing in a journal or talking to someone about how you feel, and even just sitting quietly and "mindfully" to fully experience and acknowledge the feeling, all lead to feeling better both emotionally and physically.

4. Try to be cheerful. When you laugh your body produces endorphins, the body's natural healers.

5. Process your trauma. There could be a connection between earlier experiences of psychological trauma or chronic pain or illness of the past.

90% of the diseases are a result of build-up of unresolved negative emotions and pre-programming of your mind as discussed above. Your soul tries to express these unresolved negative emotions first through your thoughts and feelings. If you fail to listen to the messages that are crying out to be heard, these messages become stronger and then harder for you to ignore. They then express and manifest themselves by means of pain, discomfort or ill-health.

Along with Emotional management, Spiritual programming of your mind is a must to unwind yourself from the clutches of the negative emotions you've held so long which has ultimately led to the dis-ease.

This we achieve by means of:

1- Facilitated Spiritual Detox

2- Meditation
